CLOVER MILL MEDIAANNOTATED PRIMARY SOURCES

Clover Mill Media · Independent Publisher · West Hartford, Connecticut

If you have a library card, you already own everything we make.

We publish premium annotated editions of history's wildest first-person accounts: con men, detectives, gamblers, and the people who caught them. Real scholars write the annotations. Professional narrators bring the text to life. And every title goes straight to hoopla, where anyone with a library card can borrow it for free.

The short version: buy it if you love it. Borrow it free if you're curious. Either way, you get the good version.

What we make

The primary source, with the lights turned on.

These books were written by the people who lived them, and the copyrights expired long ago. Free copies of the raw text are everywhere. What doesn't exist anywhere else is the edition we build on top of it.

§

Named, credentialed scholars

Every annotated edition carries 80 or more original annotations written by a historian whose name is on the cover. Historical context, biographical notes, and the occasional "here's what he isn't telling you."

Two ways to listen

The Annotated Edition weaves scholar commentary between chapters, like a director's cut. The Reading Edition is the clean, unabridged narration, nothing but the author's voice. Same book, your choice.

Built for the shelf

Annotated paperback and hardcover editions, typeset like they matter, plus an ebook with every annotation a tap away. Print worthy of the story inside it.

Our first imprint

Rogues & Detectives

The Gilded Age produced America's most audacious frauds, its most colorful criminals, and the first detectives who chased them. Then it did us one better: the people involved wrote it all down. Rogues & Detectives publishes those first-person accounts as definitive annotated editions, starting with the con that fooled Tiffany, two Civil War generals, and the most powerful bank on the West Coast.

Why we exist

Education for the masses. We are not being poetic about that.

The best true stories in American history sit in the public domain, and somehow "premium" publishing still keeps the good editions behind a paywall. We think that's backwards. So we built a company where library access isn't the charity arm; it's the business model.

Every Clover Mill title launches on hoopla, the streaming service used by thousands of public libraries. No waitlists, no holds, no purchase required. If your library subscribes, our whole catalog is sitting there right now, free, next to everything else you borrow.

Retail sales on Apple Books, Audible, and in print keep the machine running, and we love every buyer. But the mission is the shelf that never charges admission.
